Johannesburg is the largest City in South Africa and with the largest population. The city is also known as eGoli which means place of gold. Although it is the largest city it is not classed as one of South Africa’s 3 capitals, however it is the provincial capital of Gauteng. Gauteng is the wealthiest province of South Africa and has the largest metropolitan economy of any Sub-Saharan country. This is due to it’s famous gold and diamond mines.

Johannesburg also engulfs famous “sub-cities” such as Soweto and Sandton. Therefore, it is the place to be to have a really diverse african experience. You have a range of things to do there such as enjoy real city life with the shopping, dining and nightlife on offer or experience the beautiful African landscapes with many outdoor adventures such as visiting one of the many animal or safari parks in the area or hot air balloning etc. For those of you who enjoy history and culture there are a wide range of museums covering the same sectrum as that of the European museams such as art, science and lets not forget apartheid. For archaeologists and evolutionists this is a definate must see as not too far from Johannesburg lies prehistoric caves (the cradle of mankind)where the remains of an early human were discovered (Australopithecus)
