Table Mountain

Table Mountain is probably one of Cape Town’s most famous landmarks and is world renowned. It attracts thousands of tourists a year. If you are a keen photographer or hill walker this is a must see as there are more than 100 scenic ways to climb the mountain. However those of us less active tend to take the revolving cable car which brings you to the top in a couple of minutes.

The mountain itself stands at 1086 metres above sea-level and once you are on the top whichever angle you look from, the sights are magnificent. For this very reason it is one of South Africa’s must sees. Like most places its best to visit Table Mountain on a clear day however clouds can appear at anytime because of the altitude. Folklore says that these clouds are the result of a smoking contest between the devil and an old Afrikaner named Van Hunks. He is supposed to sit on Devils peak. The contest is said to be never won therefore they are apparently still puffing away.

The mountain is part of a protected nature reserve therefore wooden walkways and designated paths have been put in place to ensure a beautiful walk without damaging the unique plant life.

Do not be alarmed when walking when you see what seem to be giant guinea pigs because they are only Dassies (rock hyrax). They just laze around on the rocks in the sun and accept little nibbles from passers by. Here is a strange little fact: The Dassies are actually closer related to elephants than any other species (amazing heh!!).

Although Table Mountain is in Africa be aware that it can get very cold at the top so a jacket would be a wise decision.
