beach at Mossel Bay

Mossel Bay lies on the garden route between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. It is a small and quaint village which is utterly breathe taking! For this reason we have nominated it as a must for keen photographers or those that enjoy visiting scenic places!

The village itself is very popular as a tourist attraction due to its situation in the peninsula of the Indian Ocean! Mossel Bay is great as a holiday destination and definitely a must see due to its mild climate. This means that the weather is reasonable all year round!

The main reason however for the attraction to Mossel Bay is its status as the most historical town along the Garden route. It holds many fascinating tales dating back to 1488 when the harbour was known as “Aquada de Sào Bras.” If you are interested in history and in particular maritime this is the place to be. The many beautiful historical buildings in the town is evidence of the long ago happenings which the town as it is today. In 1601 the Dutch navigator, Paulus van Caerden, renamed it Mossel Bay, as he found that mussels were a most welcome addition to the diet of his crew. When you go there you must try the mussels there that are found in spring, they are world renowned for their exquisite taste!

For a village it definitely doesn’t lack things to do. Due to its rich history, there are many museums in the town to visit, there is the Maritime Museum which focuses on the sailing and ships of the early days of discovery and it is home to the impressive life-size replica of Bartolomeu Dias's caravel, the ship in which he sailed into Mossel Bay in the year 1488. Another place to see is the Granary Museum! There is just so much to see you will struggle to fit it all.
