The Drakensberg Mountains E-mail
Mountains in the Drakensberg

The Drakensberg Mountains of South Africa or uKhahlamba (the Barrier of Spears) as the natives call it, is a 200-kilometre-long mountainous wonderland and world heritage site.

The largest proportion of the South African component of this area falls in the kingdom of KwaZulu-Natal. Those enthusiastic rock climbers will be glad to hear that all free-standing peaks in the region demand some degree of rock- climbing skill and the use of ropes.

The most popular and must do’s are the Eastern Buttress, Sentinel, Inner Tower and Devil's Tooth. There are a number of accessible rock shelters that are filled with San rock paintings and because of this may NOT be used for overnight purposes. However it’s a must see for those of us who see ourselves as historians!

Threatened species are among the game and bird life that can be found both in the mountain tops and the forests, they can even be found under a number of the waterfalls there

Those of us who aren’t as keen on climbing don’t be disheartened. There are many things to do in the lower reached of the region such as trout fishing, horse riding and swimming. This is also a great place to shopping for that authentic piece of Africa you've always wanted!
